“I need more light over here.”

Chris looked up from his notebook as Nicole sat back on her heels and drew her forearm across her face, pushing chestnut hair from in front of her dazzling green eyes. The sleeveless cotton blouse she wore exposed more of her flesh to his gaze than he found himself able to ignore, and he had to purposely look away.

“I’ll get it,” he said. Closing the notebook, he rose, picked his way over electric cords and string grids to one of the portable spotlights. He moved it closer to the lovely professor. “Here?”

She nodded. “Yeah, that’ll do.” Then she fell back to all fours to remove dirt from a rock with a camelhair brush.

The swell of her hips and length of her muscular, brown legs made Chris want to growl. Why did Dr. Nicole Stephenson have to be so damned alluring?

Under normal circumstances, he would simply unleash his preternatural charms and seduce her, taking what he wanted and needed. But this wasn’t normal circumstances. He could run no risks with her physical well-being. If the good doctor found the object he sought, his very existence could instantly change.

Chris raised his gaze from Nicole to study the surrounding jungle and ruins, searching the darkness outside the ring of buzzing lights for any sign of movement. There were others who wanted the talisman, and who would probably stop at nothing to get it. His only hope was that Nicole and her students would uncover the truth, whatever it was, before any of the others appeared. Otherwise, the entire world could be transformed, and most likely not for the better.

Reassured by the stillness of the night, he returned to his canvas chair, hunched over the folding table, and continued working on his notes. A Coleman lantern hissed at his right ear and cast a great deal more light than he needed on the half-filled page.

After recording the evening’s progress, he discreetly surveyed the other workers. Nicole’s doctoral students, Eric, a broad-shouldered Nordic blond, Megan, a lusty redhead, and Brandon, a brainy, dark-haired, wiry man, were the only ones allowed to actually uncover new ground. Half a dozen other students, whose names he didn’t know, hauled buckets of earth to screens where treasures were sorted from debris. The faces of those others had changed over the first half of the summer as students had flown in and out of Merida to serve their time. Most seemed anxious to return to their beer-soaked summer activities back home. None appeared to pose a threat to the project. The doctoral students, moreover, exhibited true enthusiasm for the work, exceeded only by their charming professor’s.

Closing his journal and sliding it into the leather sleeve, Chris stood. He considered where his efforts would best serve the project. He could help Brandon’s group excavate the waste pit, joining the line of students carrying buckets. Or, perhaps he should—

“Oh, my God! Look at this.”

Nicole’s exclamation spun him around, and anticipation rose in his chest. He trotted across the site and dropped to his knees beside her.
